Blackmail Works

The sight of David leaving the bookmakers was all that Jane needed. She smiled and sat quietly in her car, knowing what she would do next. For too long she had resented how Suzanne and David pretended to be the happy couple, when it was clear David was nowhere near as loved up as her sister. Suzanne was being played and that really irritated, to know her younger sister was being taken for a fool.

It was the empty promises which grated with Jane most, the way he looked into Suzanne’s eyes and told her lies. Not just small ones, but a series of mistruths, all to protect the comfortable lifestyle he had and not have to compromise one little bit.

The biggest of all was the gambling, the incessant afternoon trips to the bookmakers, where his wages would be blown. It had caused friction, to the point it had nearly split them up, with Suzanne unable to tolerate the wastage it caused.

Jane had been there when he had made the promise to Suzanne, assuring her the gambling had stopped. He had vowed he would never cross their threshold again, not if it put anything in the way of their love. On the back of that promise, Suzanne had accepted his proposal, with the wedding following shortly after. It was all built on those words, that he would always prioritise their marriage first.

From the outset Jane had been less than convinced of his sincerity, the man not trustworthy in any form. She knew he was lying and had no intention of keeping his word, even if he would be careful to conceal his deceit. That had been when she decided to follow him, to keep an eye out for his sly afternoon visits. It meant the inconvenience of having to spend time parked across the road, to get the photographic evidence she needed to show Suzanne.

From the outset, that had always been her intention, but with the evidence now in her hand things had changed. Jane had other ideas, ones which did not involve upsetting her sister and perhaps genuinely changing the way David acted. It would be a better result and one where her sister could settle down with a husband who genuinely cared.

When she saw him get back into his car, she turned on the engine and followed him cautiously from a distance. Settling in three cars back, she had a buzz of excitement, savouring her role as a private detective. As she drove, she fiddled with her camera, linking it up to her phone to send a few pictures. They were sent to her email address, the easiest back-up to the device and a place where only she could access the files.

She could imagine herself confronting David and him taking the camera from her. She was not that dumb, to put herself in a compromised position, where she would not have a spare copy ready. To her email, she sent nearly twenty pictures, all of them enough to incriminate him for the act.
